Business Ambassadors

ACC Liverpool

At ACC Liverpool, we have high expectations for environmenal management.  ACC Liverpool prides itself in being one of the greenest venues in Europe.  In fact, the BT Convention Centre and the Echo Arena have been specifically designed to produce half the CO2 emissions it would without any environmentally-friendly measures whilst using 20% less electricity.

The design of the building, along with its insulation and air control system, is inherently efficient and requires significantly less energy than a traditional build would.  Lighting is high efficiency and controlled by motion detection.  Outside, rainwater is collected on the roof of the building which is then used to flush toilets.  Moreover, the rainwater accounts for about 40% of the water used for flushing toilets in the venue.

Five 20-metre low noise wind turbines situated on the riverside of the venue contribute to ACC Liverpool's electricity supply and all other electricity comes from E-on's green portfolio.

Our commitment to the environment doesn't stop there. ACC Liverpool is home to the Green Dream Team – our SWAT team of enthusiastic staff and service partners who hothouse ideas that change the way we do business to make it greener and cleaner, as well as supporting our hotel and tourism partners to do the same. Since the organisation began, sustainability has been at the heart of everything we do here at ACC Liverpool.

The events industry is generally considered to be very wasteful, but here every effort is made to try and stop this; public transport is promoted where possible, an extranet system is used to try and reduce paper handouts, recycled materials are used for all stationary, merchandise and marketing materials, and a green advice page for event organisers is soon to be incorporated onto our website. ACC Liverpool's ‘green dream team’ is made up of representatives from each team who attend regular meetings and workshops to ensures that ideas and information is effectively fed back across the organisation. Some of its achievements so far have been a successful ‘ideas’ competition, the implementation of eco-buttons and a full recycling system in both offices.

Alison Bailey Smith

Alison's work has spanned almost 2 decades and three different countries since leaving Edinburgh College of Art in 1990. The motivation behind her work comes from being the child of post war parents, Scottish thriftiness and an avid watcher of Blue Peter!  Her need to re-use, re-develop and re-create can be seen in her wide use of ordinary materials with extra-ordinary results.

Although her training was initially in Jewellery and silver-smithing, she has crossed over successfully into the world of textiles, costume and fashion – evident in her numerous awards (Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year, Recycling Fashion Designer of the Year and various awards for Fibre in North America and Australasia).

Alison’s staple ingredient in her work has been wire that she reclaims from old televisions, the older the better. She has found over a hundred different colours and hues of copper and aluminium wire.  Lately though, due to the rate of development in technology, she is finding it harder to find the old television sets and has had to resort to buying various colours of wire! There is always a high component of re-used materials in her work - whether it is re-using charity shop finds or sweetie wrappers to get the right colour. She has become increasingly aware of how wasteful our society is becoming.

The Big Yellow Self-Storage Company

the application of passive building principles, viable renewable energy and other sustainable criteria." Its strategy is to reduce energy consumption and associated carbon dioxide emissions during construction and operation of its buildings. Our Corporate Social Responsibility policy can be viewed on our web site www.bigyellow.co.uk under CSR.

The self storage area is insulated and resonably air tight so that no heating and cooling is required, this is mainly due to the methods of manufacture, the building cladding and other building fabrics. Staff areas use "A" rated energy efficient heating and cooling systems and kitchen and toilet extracts are linked to the lighting circuit for activation and have a timed cut out of 25 minutes. Big Yellow uses new generation T5 lighting which can save up to 30% reduction in energy use and has installed energy efficient lifts which can save up to 30% in Carbon Dioxide emissions. We have a small garden area at the rear of our store to help draw in Carbon Dioxide emmisions and is fed by rain water which we collect in water butts.

All staff are made aware of our commitments during initial training and do their part by ensuring all none essential equipment is switched off when not needed, paper is recycled and our waste disposal and noise policies are upheld by our customers, even the products we sell are are recyclable.To enable store managers to effectively monitor energy use and improve efficiency an "energy walk round check list" has been developed following the guidance provided by the Carbon Trust website.

Curtins Consulting Limited

Curtins is a structural and civil engineering consultancy whose roots are firmly grounded in the city. We are the UK's leading independent Consulting Engineers having specialised in building structures for over 50 years.

Our staff are forward thinking individuals who seek opportunities to adapt and develop ideas that have potential to bring a benefit  to the company, our clients and the general community.  We consider the Green Agenda to be one such initiative.

We recognise the need to reduce the impact of our activities.  In recognising this we created an Action Plan to assess and minimise these impacts.  The Action Plan subsequently informed the development of the company’s ISO 14001 accredited Environmental Management System.

Early on in this process it became clear that our immediate activities (e.g. office based workplace) contributed far smaller net impacts compared to those that we influenced (e.g. modes of construction and specification ).  In response to this we have  established a Sustainabiltiy Focus Group to disseminate guidance on Green Agenda issues to both staff and clients.

Dame Ellen MacArthur

"One big challenge which I'm really driving forward, overlaid on all our projects, is one of trying to figure out how to live and work in a more sustainable way.  The winter before last I was given the chance to spend some time in Antarctica and it was just incredible. Visiting such a remarkable place made me stop and take in what was around me and reflect on my experiences and all that I have seen in a decade of life on the ocean. It was a stark reminder to me of just how important such wild and virtually untouched places are and how we need to look after them to ensure that they survive in the future. It also made me realise how vastly different life is there compared to life back home in our heavily consumerist society.  I am as guilty as anyone of consuming the planet's resources in an unsustainable way, including lots of travel and not all using just the wind!

"The big challenge I, and we as a company, have is working out how to continue to develop, evolve and do exciting and rewarding projects in a way which is much more sustainable. On the boat, when you leave for a record, you take the absolute minimum with you. You manage what you have down to the last drop of fuel or water, and if you run out there is no way you can stop for more! At sea even money has absolutely no value, it's your resources that count. It's a very different world. You are so careful never to leave the computer screens or the lights on. You know exactly how much diesel you need per day and you monitor your batteries and consumption as if they were the boat's heart rate.

"This attention to detail, to avoidance of waste, to using every element of the resource available is definitely in my blood - I have to thank my parents for bringing me up to appreciate this - and I've definitely managed to put this to competitive advantage in the way it's helped me manage my race boats out on the ocean. The contrast of this with life on land in the Western world has made me think hard. There is a chasm of difference between the two. Investigating, and understanding this better has become a passion for me. To learn, to improve and to share this journey is my big goal for the coming years."

Island Group

At the Island Group, we are proud of the work we have achieved as a Facilities Maintenance company operating throughout the UK from our head office in the heart of Liverpool.

We have developed two products which we know make a significant impact on our own Carbon Footprint, and create employment:

  • the first is our Client Asset Tracker, a system for bar coding Street Lights. Engineers then use a hand held PC to scan the code and transfer all job notes elctronically to a central computer. This has drastically reduced the amount of paper generated, from approximately one hundred thousand sheets of A4 to less than five thousand.

  • in June of this year we introduced our Car Park Division and launched with a battery and solar powered Pay & Display machine. We have received our first orders for a machine that is 97% recyclable with the battery 100% recyclable. Both of these innovations are the leading assets of our business, reducing our Carbon Footprint and creating local jobs.

Johnson Cleaners

As part of our strategy of reducing the impact our business has on the environment, we have introduced a number of green initiatives that are already changing the way Johnson Cleaners operates. We are the largest UK dry cleaner to use the GreenEarth ® cleaning system, proven to be kinder to clothing and the environment.  This is because it uses pure liquid silicone, which is a safe and natural by-product of sand – what’s more, it doesn’t cost the customer any more either. We have also just issued our revised annual ‘Carbon Policy’ for 2010, which highlights our achievements in 2009 and our goals for 2010.  One of the goals is to reduce our energy usage by 10 per cent in 2010, having signed up to the national energy reduction initiative, 10:10 (www.1010.uk.org). In 2010, we also aim to reduce our commitment to using plastic by recycling more of our iconic yellow hangers.  So far in 2009, we have reduced our requirement for new hangers by 21 per cent. Achieving these goals and many more can help us make a positive change to help the environment that we all live in. For more information, please visit:  www.johnsoncleaners.com/environment.

Liverpool ONE

Liverpool ONE is the largest city centre regeneration project in Europe, and has been instrumental in reconfirming Liverpool's status as one of Europe's most exciting destinations.  From its inception, Liverpool ONE has been driven by an ethos of urban design and city living with an emphasis on retail-led expansion which has transformed Liverpool to its former glories. The development aimed to link the city once again with its famous waterfront by vastly expanding Liverpool's shopping district.

Tasked with this rejuvenation was property developer Grosvenor, who were appointed to rebuild the centre of Liverpool with a project which would top £1 billion.  2008 proved a very exciting time for the city of Liverpool, sa the launch of Liverpool ONE coincided with the celebrations for the city's year as European Capital of Culture.

The development was completed in October 2008, and Liverpool ONE is now a 1.65 million sq ft shopping and leisure complex which includes 160 shops, more than 20 bars and restaurants, a 14 screen cinema, 500 apartments, 3000 car parking spaces, 2 hotels and a 5 acre park.  Liverpool ONE is home to flagship stores for Jogn Lewis and Debenhams, and has brought over 65 new brands to the city, including Cath Kidston, GIVe, Hollister, The Entertainer and Zara Home.

Liverpool ONE is currently working towards ISO 14001 accreditation within the next 12 months.  We currently recycle our office paper/plastic/cans and as we are responsible for the waste produced by our tenants, we also recycle the cardboard they produce.

Riverford Home Delivery

Riverford is the UK's largest and best loved organic vegetable box scheme.  From the beginning in 1987, the business has been committed to minimising its environmental impact.  This is undertaken through a number of initiatives.  "Packaging", "Re-use" and "Recycle" are the watchwords of everything we do.  "Food Miles" - we use as much local produce as possible, by minimising imports and never air freight produce.  Riverford covers its environmental policies in depth, coupled with some interesting studies that seek to dispell common myths in this complex subject at www.riverfordenvironment.co.uk.   Riverford was awarded the "Most Ethical Business" in the Observer Awards 2009 with its approach to sustainable development being one of the significant contributory factors.  This makes Riverford an ideal Green Ambassador for Liverpool.

R. S. Clare

RS Clare & Co Ltd was founded in Liverpool in 1748 by Richard S Clare at the start of the industrial revolution.  We are the longest established company manufacturing lubricants in the United Kingdom.

We have embraced a positive approach to environmental improvement for more than six years.  In 2003, the company was formally certified to ISO14001 and has continued to improve since.

Our company policy challenges the marketing of environmentally balanced products, reduce waste and use energy efficiently. To this effect, we produce numerous biodegradable products and have saved in excess of £100,000 through some of the environmental improvement projects focused on energy reduction, waste reduction and material changes. This has led to recognition by winning environmental awards which have in turn spurred us to implement further improvements which have been right for the environment and saved us significant costs.

Shop Direct Group

Shop Direct Home Shopping Limited is the UK’s leading online and home shopping retailer, with annual sales of around £1.5 billion from 5 million customers.   We are one of the largest online retailers in the UK.

We achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing CO2 year-on-year in 2008. For our Speke HQ and 21 other UK sites, we aim to further reduce overall energy consumption by 20% for the end of 2009's YOE, crucially in our data centres, one of the world’s most rapid growth sectors for energy usage.

We purchase 100% green energy and will generate up to 12.000 kwh/s at our Speke HQ by installing a wind turbine for YOE.   We have also reduced water consumption by 40.000m3, minimised waste by 839 tonnes year-on-year, and remain on-target to achieve our overall UK recycling target of 65% (certain sites recycle as high as 90%).

We have worked in partnership with a number of prominent organisations including Philips to develop flexible LED tube lighting, saving some 50 tonnes of CO2 per year on one light alone! The Energy Saving Trust (EST) commended our vehicle fleet CO2 savings, and we trained 153 local motorists via the EST's 'Smarter Driving Program', reducing fuel consumption by 10-20% under urban driving conditions.

We currently chair the United Nations Global Compact UK Network, providing a platform for Corporate Responsibility excellence and wish to share our success and knowledge as a YOE Green Ambassador to benefit local businesses and organisations.We also have between 70-90 vehicles per day sharing, saving a minimum 3407 miles daily. That’s over 817, 000 miles per year and over 100,000 journeys per year. This reduces emissions by a minimum 210 tonnes CO2 per year. Furthermore, we have 140 irregular sharers in the scheme further boosting car sharing.

Team Logic

Team Logic (TL) distributes environmental office software and is the UK market leader in this field.

Our environmental office footprint has been reduced in two significant areas: power management for our PC fleet halved our electricity usage, whilst consumable optimisation across the printer fleet has reduced our toner, ink and paper expenditure by about 50%. Whitebox

At Whitebox, we allow regular income to be generated from everyday web search for public and charitable causes.  In partnership with Yahoo we offer their internet search service to companies, local authorities and other large organizations for deployment:

  • onto their intranets and websites;

  • as default search service in individual PC & laptop browsers;

  • a personal search page for supporters, employees or residents;

  • for placement onto the intranets or websites of corporate supporters.

This search service, used in the normal way and with the normal results, generates money that would otherwise be retained by the search engines and advertisers.

Our clients apply these funds to their CSR programmes, charitable causes or, increasingly, carbon-reduction and sustainability programmes.

Our systems and technology allows quick and easy deployment of the search box, it tracks all the searches to attribute income, and it allows the client to access their results.
